ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
"It is a pleasure
to experience Jean work. She has that rare capacity
to be able to 'sit in the airport control tower position' and
at the same time
to be aware of all the 'planes' in her vision and to be able to
help them find out
about themselves and their relationship to each other."-- Virginia Satir
Jean McLendon, Director of Training Programs
LCSW, LMFT, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
- Jean McLendon brings over
thirty years of professional experience to her career in mental health, human relations,
and organizational change. Featured in Allyn and Bacon's video
series "Family Therapy with the Experts", She has presented
nationally and internationally on the topics of organizational consulting and psychotherapy.
In 2002 Jean was the Keynote Presenter at the Annual Conference
of the American Academy of Psychotherapists. Jean's contributions were recognized recently
as she was awarded the 2003 NCAAMFT Champion of the Family
Award and in 2004, Avanta's Living Treasure Award,
by Avanta, The Virginia Satir Network, Inc. She is published
in four journals: Anchor Point, Training and Development, IEEE
(International Electrical Electronic Engineers) Software and
the Journal for Couples Therapy. She has chapters in four books.
(See Bibliography.) She holds
a graduate degree in clinical social work from the University
of Hawaii and a certificate in Mental Health Administration from
the School of Medicine, Community Psychiatry Division at the
University of North Carolina.
- Mentored for nearly twenty
years by the late Virginia Satir, renowned educator-author
and family systems therapist,
Jean is known as one of the foremost practitioners of Satir's
methods. When Satir became ill, she requested Jean direct her
international Colorado summer
Process Community Institute. Satir died in 1988, leaving the
bulk of her estate to Avanta: The Virginia Satir Network, Inc.
and naming a seven member learning committee whose job it was
to provide transitional planning for Satir's long range goals.
Jean was a member of this
committee and was also named by Avanta as a member of their triadic
Directorate of Training. Currently she serves as President of
The Virginia Satir Global Network.
- Jean taught at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, at the Staff College of the
National Institute of Mental Health, and served as adjunct faculty
to the Union Institute. She has managed four human service programs
and was a founding partner in a consulting firm for seven years. She is the Executive Director
of The Virginia Satir Global
Network, a facuulty member of the Satir
Institute of the Southeast, Inc. and a faculty specialist
for the Organization Systems
Renewal Graduate Program at Seattle University. Jean
directs the nationally recognized
Chapel Hill-based Satir Systems Training Programs, affiliated
with The Satir Institute of the Southeast, Inc. an affiliate
of The Virginia Satir Global Network.
- In her consulting practice,
Jean has worked with leaders and teams in young, high-tech,
fast-growing businesses; large
well-established insurance and finance companies; hospitals; state and federal governmental
agencies; manufacturing companies; and educational institutions.
She is regularly engaged by businesses to consult on matters
of team development, succession planning, conflict resolution,
transition and change management, and leadership development.
In her psychotherapy practice, she works with individual, couples and families and supervises
other psychotherapists.
- The heart of Jean's methodology
is based on the belief that the level of one's self- or
system-esteem directly effects
how one communicates with others and how well an individual or group is able to make
use of their internal resources (e.g. their mental, spiritual,
emotional, and physical). Similarly, her work supports her belief
that congruence is the single most powerful strategic intervention
for changing one's health, relationships, and performance and
that leadership is the strategic and conscious use of the self
for promoting positive
outcomes via human connections. Her esteem-building approach
to change blends her psychotherapeutic, teaching, and organizational
development skills with family
systems and communication theories. Her work is outcome-guided
and process-driven. Jean's keen ability to understand the universal
human issues and dynamics associated
with the most complex and conflicted client situations allows
her to respond successfully to a broad range of human and organizational
goals and problems. She is at her best when working with organizations,
teams, families, and partnerships who are seeking to unlock their ability to access the
best they and others have to offer.
