The workshop will cover the following topics. Listed below are the learning objectives for each topic. Each topic will have a theory, experiential, and application component. A workbook and written materials covering all topics will be provided. There will be opportunity to talk about how the techniques and concepts apply to current situations of participants.
1. In Overview Of The Satir System you will learn:
a. A brief history of Virginia Satir and the Satir System, its core beliefs, values, and characteristic methods.
b. The relationship of the Satir System to current schools of organizational development, e.g.,
- Rational decision models
- Learning organization models
- Human relations models
c. Its general application to:
- Strategic Planning
- Culture Development
- Change Management
- Management Development
2. In "The Five Freedoms" you will learn:
a. A way of demonstrating the depth of the barriers to openness and honesty in most organizations and groups.
b. How lessons about communication learned in the family of origin can impact organizational life.
c. How norms that discourage honesty can get embedded in the system through covert processes.
d. The necessity of conscious intention at individual, group, and system levels to work toward a more open, honest, authentic organizational culture
3. In "The Satir Change Model" and the "7A's" you will learn:
a. At the organizational level, you will learn:
- How to recognize when your organization is "ripe for change"
- What to expect when a "foreign element" is introduced
- The characteristics of the organization required to assimilate change
- How to create a common language about change that helps people manage anxiety and move quickly into effective coping
b. At the individual level, you will learn:
- A six-part diagnostic model about the degree to which you and those you work with have mastered a given change
- How to use the model to identify steps which have been "left out"
- How to plan interventions that help those you work with make the right next step so they do not stagnate by doing too little or defeat themselves by attempting too much
4. In "Ingredients of an Interaction," you will learn:
a. A powerful five-part scheme for understanding and teaching communications processes
b. How to diagnose breakdowns in interpersonal communications
c. How to "fix" broken communications by calling for the missing element
d. Applications of the model for team building; developing the learning organization, conflict resolutions, trust building with those you work with, giving and receiving interpersonal feedback
5. In "The Stress Ballet," you will learn
a.The four typical defensive coping responses to stress, and their consequences for individual and organizational health
b. How these responses become dysfunctional organizational patterns
c. How each dysfunctional pattern can be transformed into a positive problem-solving behavior
d. To diagnose your own patterns and to train others to become aware of their patterns
6. In "Interpersonal and Organizational Congruence," you will learn:
a. The three essential criteria of conflict resolution
b. How the "Getting to Yes" model can be improved by adding the feeling element
c. How to negotiate and help others negotiate win-win-win conflict resolutions
d. How to work toward congruence in your own relationships
7. In "Temperature Taking in Organizations," you will learn:
a. A technique for organizational self-assessment including:
- Appreciation
- Information
- Puzzles
- Complaints with recommendations
b. How temperature taking can be used to create a safe environment for team self-assessment, and for keeping managers and others aware of what is really going on in the group
c. How the approach can be adapted for staff meetings, quality teams, and work groups
8. In "The Satir Self-Esteem Kit," you will learn:
a. The "inner workings" of self-esteem and how it relates to key organizational behaviors such as risk taking and creativity and problem-solving.
b. The parts of our self-esteem apparatus that allow us to be fully human
c. How to become more familiar with and to access each part of our unique self-esteem kit
d. How to use the self-esteem kit as part of management and employee development programs and developing a culture of empowerment.
9. In "Organizational Sculpting," you will learn:
a. A powerful interactive tool for simulating organizational situations at group meetings and workshop including:
- Assessing and diagnosing interpersonal and intergroup problems
- Identifying solution components
- Modeling for the states and dynamics
- Analyzing organizational environments
b. How the technique can be applied to:
- team building
- project planning
- strategic planning
- re-engineering
- conflict resolution
